Apple today released Apple TV Software Update 2.3 which adds support...

Apple has just released software update 2.3 for the Apple TV. Right now, we don't have the change log, but we'll update the post as soon as we get more information.

It is important to know that as with all other Apple TV firmware updates, running the update WILL remove any non-Apple TV software. So if you have installed the USB boxee hack you might want to wait on running the update.

Apple TV will eventually prompt you to run the automatic update, so boxee or XBMC users might want to check out the XBMC.org forums for information on disabling automatic updates.

If you are not using any additional software and would like to download this new update, you can do so by visiting Settings > General > Software Update from the main Apple TV menu. If you notice any new features, be sure to let us know in the comments.

Update: Apple has now posted a change log on their website. According to the knowledge base article, the following aspects of Apple TV have been updated:

Thanks for the tip, Jeff.

Yesterday, our buddy David Chartier at Ars and Sam Oliver at AppleInsider both publicized an issue that's been burning up the support boards for a while now: iTunes video rentals and purchases in HD are flagged for HDCP control, and in cooperation with the new Mini DisplayPort connector on the MacBook and MacBook Pro unibody models, those movies and TV shows are refusing to play back on non-compliant external displays.

In this case, 'compliant' means HDMI or recent-vintage DVI, but even monitors or TVs that support HDCP may not properly negotiate with the DisplayPort connector to give iTunes and QuickTime the all-clear signal (if so, quitting and relaunching iTunes once the display is hooked up may clear the playback hold). Equally annoying: HDCP is only supposed to apply to 'high-value' digital streams, meaning standard-def purchases and rentals on the iTunes store should be out of scope... but some reports indicate that both the HD and SD instances are flagged, blocking playback on anything but the laptop's internal display or a straight-thru HDMI connection. Argh!

While Apple TV users with unconventional output setups have been dealing with this aggravation since the beginning of the year, MacBook and MBP owners have largely steered clear, even as the HD content on iTunes became available for playback on the laptops. Now that the hardware and software have come into sync on the unibody models, Apple's compliance with HDCP -- a necessary but appalling condition of the content companies that deliver the HD movies and TV shows -- is beginning to close out the 'analog hole' and cause real aggravation for laptop owners with legitimate use cases. Talk about a bag of hurt.

Last year, the Give Good Food to Your Mac promo offered discounts on apps exclusively from Indie developers in Europe. This year the promo is back, and they've opened the doors to developers from around the world. There are some 60 apps available, and the deal is this: buy 3 apps and get a 20% discount on the total price, buy more apps and the discount increases up to 50% for 5 apps or more. Last year you could get a 70% discount at 10 apps or more, but that doesn't look like it's on the cutting board any more. The application lineup, however, is impressive. All of those Indie apps you were interested in but knew they would be part of a bundle sooner or later ... you'll probably find them here.

The lineup includes apps from Aquafadas, Houdah Software, Devon Technologies and many more. Some of my favorite software is included, such as Reinvented Software's Together (recently mentioned) and ShareTool (a recent Friday Favorite). The Hydra Aperture plugin, which we've also covered before, Cheetah 3D, Voice Candy ... it's quite a list. Stop by the Give Good Food to your Mac page and see if there's not something there to whet your appetite. The promo is running now and goes until December 1st.

  • Character counter
  • SMS forwarding (works with chat conversations too)
  • Send contacts through SMS
  • Easy contact list search
  • Use stock message templates or create your own

A free but unregistered version of MySMS can be downloaded through Cydia. It's already full-featured, but the devs say that 20 of messages will send a little longer than usual. Homebrew developer ZodTTD has finally released version 2.0.0 of his long-awaited Sega Genesis and Sega CD emulator, genesis4iphone. This version works with iPhones and iPod Touches running on firmware 2.x.x.

This release comes with the same skin as ZodTTD's earlier release, mame4iphone,
but the good news here is that you can actually change the skin yourself by editing the controller_hs1.png/.txt files in the Application directory of the app. Here's a list of what else is new in v2.0.0:
  • A port of Notaz's continued support of PicoDrive.
  • New interface/GUI similar to mame4iphone.
  • Sound has been heavily improved! To enable sound, goto Now Playing and turn up the volume slider before entering a game.
  • Save state support is now working.
  • Supports zipped ROMs, and they happen to load much faster than unzipped ROMs...still!
  • Sega CD support is implemented though currently untested by me.
genesis4iphone can be downloaded for free at ZodTTD's public repository on Cydia.

The old adage, "if you can't beat them, join them", is quite relevant in this very horrific market environment. The brutality of the market's dive has been severe and it might just be the time to rethink your strategy. Wouldn't it be prudent to initiate a 180 degree turn by unloading your long holdings (I know it's hard selling your positions at such low prices) and replacing them with corresponding short positions?

To sell short, all you need to do is open a margin account. The transaction is just the opposite of going long, as you sell first and buy later. The objective is to buy back the shares at a price lower than you sold them for, thus pocketing the difference as your profit.

Interesting article on Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) beating Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) to the "touch" with regard to providing a touch screen interface on a computer. It's certainly a worthwhile read. However, I've long commented on AAPL and its particular touch technology being infused into its computer lineup in some way. Laptops will likely be the first enabled. However, I'll take some assertions in the article to task.

While AAPL is known to be a first mover and always have that advantage, that's not always the case. I think it's more the fact that when the company does something it just executes so well and improves an existing product category so dramatically that people think it's a first mover product.

It certainly was very late entering the cellular market but did it spectacularly with a game changer. Portable music devices were around for years and the iPod was the ultimate game changer. In fact, the continued iPod dominance with this mature of a product is simply shocking. I could give more examples but the point is made.

There is an Apple (AAPL) story that I don't want you to miss. It's bigger than the Mac, it's bigger than the iPod, and it's bigger than the iPhone. Steve Jobs briefly mentioned it in the quarterly conference call and it deserves repeating, "We've never seen anything like this in our careers".

Of course, I'm talking about the App Store. This store is causing a sea change in both the mobile phone industry and the gaming industry that threatens the viability of all competitors. There have already been approximately 250 million apps downloaded among the 6000 applications available. Mr. Jobs adds:

It's 13F filing time again. Institutional money managers who oversee more than $100 million must report their holdings to the SEC each quarter in their 13F report. These reports can be used to analyze the position movements of the best fund managers in the industry. Sometimes they can even be used to figure out the manager’s current strategy, but keep in mind the funds that I am going to review are most likely hedged in some way. Also keep in mind that not every position held is shown in these filings and many of these funds have high turnover; so don’t simply assume you can buy one of their positions and sit tight.

I decided to look at several firms which I feel are some of the best in the industry, but feel free to comment if you know of any other firms that I should list next quarter.

When Mark Papermaster decided to leave IBM for Apple, it sent a strange signal to many industry pundits. Why would Apple, Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) be hiring a dyed-in-the-wool microchip designer to run its consumer products division? Does it need help in the hardware engineering department or is it out to create another breakthrough in consumer product design to keep the iPod and iPhone cash cows alive as those categories age?

Although we didn't get an answer to those questions, Papermaster was forced to play a bit of tug of war, at least legally. IBM Corp. (NYSE: IBM) was able to convince a judge to put an injunction on his reporting to work at Apple due to a non-compete clause with his former employer. Papermaster has now countered by saying that IBM and Apple do not compete at all in the area where he will be employed at Apple. He's right -- in fact, IBM and Apple don't compete on any level at all any longer.

So, we have to wonder what IBM's beef is here. Some clauses in his contract with IBM are so broad that apparently Papermaster should not be able to work for any tech company for a year after leaving IBM. The non-compete portion of this contract states that he can't go to work for the competition, even if there is no competition in the product space. In other words, Papermaster's countersuit will try to find this section of his contract to be invalid due to the fact that IBM's interests won't be hurt in any way by his employment at Apple. Good luck on that one. Today there will be a meeting between the two companies to hash out details, so this may become a bit thicker soon.

"If you can tolerate the volatility, it's a good idea to begin dipping back in to the stock market, in solid companies with strong cash balances, little debt and great prospects," says wireless sector expert Nikhil Hutheesing.

In The Forbes Wireless Stock Watch, the advisor asks, ""In the long run, smart investments today will lead to profits down the road. One of those companies, that I now think looks attractive, is the Canadian maker of the BlackBerry - Research in Motion (NASDAQ: RIMM)."

"The Canadian company introduced the BlackBerry in 1999 and it quickly became a must-have way for employees oflarge companies to communicate through email and voice wirelessly. In its fiscal 2008 (which ended in February) the company sold nearly 14 million devices (more than double the year before).

"Recently, though, the financial crisis has dealt a strong blow to the company. Investors doubt whether RIMM can repeat the 90% growth in revenues that it achieved in fiscal 2008.

"Not only is the slowing economy a threat to growth but so is increased competition. Apple's iPhone, for example, has been a hit among consumers and now the company is pushing into the corporate market, trying to erode Research In Motion's market share.

Freeverse's Flick Fishing, which we took a look at last week, has shot to the top of the charts in the App Store, and OSX Reality sent us a note about an interview with the game's designer, Aaron Fothergill. His brother Adam put together the graphics and sound, and Aaron did the actual coding and design. Aaron says it's a tough racket putting iPhone games together -- you've got to balance quality (especially production values, something that we could probably use way more of on the App Store) with time and cost. Since iPhone games sell cheap, it's not an easy job making sure you don't go overboard investing way more than you'll get back on return. But of course, if you put in too little time and charge too much, users will call you out for selling high-priced junk.

He also talks about Mac gaming in general, and immersion on the iPhone specifically -- casual games are doing well on the App Store, and some developers are saying that you just can't make an extremely immersive game on a platform where people are constantly being called, texting, and on the move. I have to agree with Aaron -- it's not that you can't be immersive, it's that you have to do it the right way. There's nothing wrong with short bursts of gameplay, but you have to realize from the beginning that that's what your users will be doing.

And finally, he gives out some information about a Flick Fishing update that's incoming: the recently released 1.1 patch consisted of bug fixes, but the upcoming 1.2 update will add some new features, maybe even 8 player networked play.

I first mentioned this app at the end of September when word leaked out that GroundSpeak, the keepers of the Geocaching.com Web site, was working on an iPhone app.

If you're not familiar with the hobby/sport/addiction that is geocaching, the concept is very simple -- people go out and hide caches in the great outdoors, use a GPS receiver to find the coordinates of the hide, then post the cache on the Geocaching.com Web site. Cachers go to the Web site, search for caches that are near their present location, and then use their GPS receivers to find the approximate location of the cache. Once they're done bushwhacking and find the cache, they sign the logbook, take and place trade items, and then log the find on the Web site.

A week after I acquired my iPhone 3G, I wrote a post talking about how to use the built-in GPS receiver and Mobile Safari to "do" geocaching. While the method works well, I was waiting and hoping for a much better way to geocache with the iPhone 3G. With the recent release of Geocaching for iPhone, it's time to see if that better way is finally here. Read on for more details!

Kevin just finished launching a metric ton of BlackBerry Storm coverage over on Crackberry.com, including the compulsory unboxing pr0n, bumpy typing test, and an iPhone 3G vs. BlackBerry Storm browser battle. If we recall the last time an iPhone 3G met a BlackBerry (Bold) in single web combat, the buggy Bold caused Kevin himself to throw in the towel.

This time?

The Storm still lacks Javascript chops (attn: RIM, see SquirelFish, Tracemonkey, V8, etc.!) so turns it off by default. The iPhone OS 2.1 browser is a tad crash prone. Fair fight? Well, let’s not forget the Berry’s is likely still itching to brawl over the most recent sales, satisfaction, and reliability figures, b’okay? But it’s the fastest fight Kevin had time for… for now.

The results?

iPhone did better when the Storm had Javascript on, but took a beating and crashed and burned twice when the Storm defaulted to Javascript off (and the iPhone still had it on).

How much of a role was played by the difference in network speed between Verizon’s EVDO rev A and AT&T’s HSDPA we don’t know, and since the Storm completely lacks WiFi, a pure browser test may forever elude us. (Early bird Walt Mossberg claims he got different results in different locations where each network had stronger or weaker signals, of course, but that the iPhone on WiFi was consistently the fastest — we’d add to that WiFi enables all sorts of additional networking features as well, like file exchange and remote control).

In either case, judging by how fast the blogerati have jumped on the Storm wagon, and how often the iPhone is coming up in the coverage, that this rivalry has only just begun!
